Do you ever feel like you don’t have enough space in your home? What was once cute and cosy may have started to feel claustrophobic. We tend to put items into our homes at a rate that is faster than we remove items.

Here are a few handy ways of optimising space in your home:

Declutter

The number one tip for creating more space in your home is to regularly declutter. Decluttering includes sifting through each room and removing items that you no longer need/want/use. These items can then be donated or sold.

We have removed all of our clutter, but the house still feels too crowded. How else can we maximize the space in our home?

article 3Build up

Instead of buying storage cupboards and drawers, think up, not out. Try to pick out tall shelves and cabinets that offer optimum storage space that extends high up to the ceiling. I also recommend a portable step ladder.

Hidden space

There are areas in your house that may have unused spaced that is often overlooked. Under the staircase for example. Under the staircase has huge storage potential, if your staircase is not enclosed, it might be a good idea to get out the tool bag and cover up that space, I guarantee this will provide heaps of hidden space.

More than one use

Invest in multipurpose furniture. There are plenty of creative and clever pieces of furniture available that can be used to serve a number of purposes in the house. For example, fold away beds that you can pack away when not in use or beds with cupboard storage underneath. The same goes for pack away tables that you can unfold when required and pack away when not in use.

Space illusionsarticle 4

There are a few little tricks that you can use as well to make your home appear bigger than it is. If you have short ceilings, hang your drapes from as close to the top of the ceiling as possible. This will give the illusion that your ceilings are higher. Another illusion is to add mirrors, visually the mirrors will give the illusion of more space.

Overlooked storage

Is there space you are missing? Try to utilise every inch of space in your home. When you open your cupboard doors, all of your shelves may be full, but if you add hooks or shelves to the inside of the doors as well you may be able to increase your overall storage space.
